Reinvigorating international campaigns to ban landmines and cluster munitions

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines — Cluster Munition Coalition (ICBL-CMC) unites civil society organisations worldwide to eliminate indiscriminate weapons. Their Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor (The Monitor) serves as the monitoring régime for the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

ICBL-CMC was experiencing several challenges with its multi-site Craft website — slow load times, a poor authoring experience, and the inability to make edits across multiple sections, among others. It decided to reach out to experts to help them overcome these system limitations and incorporate some new ideas along the way. That’s where Miranj came in. With over a decade of Craft CMS experience under our belt, we audited the existing setup to identify the root cause of the problems. We identified several technical shortcomings, including running outdated software, missing technical SEO configurations and having a rigid content model that severely constrains authoring flexibility.

Based on our analysis, we decided to migrate the website architecture from JAMStack to simple Craft-native Twig templates and implement several modelling improvements to enable the clients to regain editorial control of the website. While both websites continue to run off a single Craft CMS setup, we refactored the CMS control panel to enable authors to freely compose new pages using modular page-building blocks. We also added the ability to embed external visualisations and create customised data dashboards. Along the way, we also improved the overall template designs for consistency across the two websites, along with other visual refinements.

We look forward to seeing ICBL-CMC continue its vital work for a safer world, and are honoured to have made a small contribution in its journey.
